In plain English

A form of property ownership where the buyer holds the title indefinitely. Designated freehold areas in Dubai (e.g. Dubai Marina, Downtown, Palm Jumeirah) are open to foreign ownership.

What Freehold means in practice

Freehold ownership means you hold the title to the property outright and indefinitely, with the right to sell, let or bequeath it. There is no expiring lease sitting behind your ownership.

It is the strongest form of title available and the one lenders are most comfortable financing, because the security they register against it is durable.

How it works in the UAE

In Dubai, foreign nationals may own freehold only in designated areas — among them Dubai Marina, Downtown and Palm Jumeirah. Outside those zones, ownership may be leasehold or restricted, and mortgage availability narrows considerably as a result, so confirming the designation is an early step in any purchase.

A worked example

A buyer comparing two similar apartments may find the one inside a designated freehold area attracts offers from a wide panel of lenders, while the other draws few or none because the title itself limits what can be registered against it.
